YouthLine is partnering with mental health organizations and government agencies across Hawai‘i to launch a call center on Maui. We want youth in Hawai‘i to get help when they need it. We are looking for youth who are passionate about mental health and helping their peers. We will be at community events letting youth know about YouthLine!
Let’s Talk. Get Help Now.
Youth are available to help daily from 1-7pm HST (adults are available by phone at all other times). Call, text, or chat with us today.
YouthLine is a free peer-to-peer help, support, and crisis line for youth up to age 24. No problem is too big or too small for YouthLine – reach out to us today!
YouthLine is confidential to a point: while we will never share conversations had on the lines, we are mandatory reporters. If a young person is experiencing or has experienced abuse, neglect, or assault, or if there are immediate safety concerns, YouthLine may contact other agencies to ensure the best support and safety for the young person in crisis.
Join the YouthLine team!
Why volunteer? Maybe you’ve been there before. Maybe you know what it’s like to struggle with mental health, to feel alone, or to be broken up with. Maybe you really want to help others. Maybe it is all of the above. By volunteering with YouthLine, you can offer help and hope to peers going through a hard time.
With all the training and supervision you get, you will feel well supported in helping your peers be heard and making the best choice for them to move toward safety and wellness. For more information, visit, our Volunteer page, text ‘YLVol’ to 85511, or email us at YLVolunteering@linesforlife.org!
Community Outreach
YouthLine’s community outreach is an important way that youth volunteers and staff connect with and serve those in the community.
Youth volunteers and staff also attend health fairs, conferences, resource fairs, and other community events to spread awareness of YouthLine and share volunteer opportunities in Maui County. YouthLine will also work with community partners to provide youth-focused workshops that provide information and resources.
Through community outreach, YouthLine hopes to spread the word about YouthLine and educate others about mental health, wellness, breaking the stigma around these topics, and normalizing reaching out for help when youth or their friends are struggling.
For more information, to invite YouthLine to be present at your event, or to schedule YouthLine outreach in your area, email YouthL@linesforlife.org.

History
In 2000, YouthLine was created after children of Lines for Life Board members asked why there was no specific resource for youth. They shared that youth were not reaching out to crisis lines or accessing other mental health support due to a multitude of reasons: lack of comfort and familiarity with the process of reaching out, not wanting to talk to adults, not feeling like they were allowed to say what they really wanted to say, mental health stigma, and many others. Lines for Life launched YouthLine’s help, support, and crisis line, youth development program, and education and outreach initiatives to provide peer-to-peer mental health crisis intervention, prevention, and support for youth in Oregon. Since then, YouthLine has grown to serving over 25,000 youth annually from across the United states with the line and thousands of Oregon youth through the other components of the program.
Seeing the importance of mental health education and community outreach, YouthLine made a commitment to partner with communities across Oregon and the United States to provide our services to other areas. In doing so, YouthLine continues to see barriers in accessing mental health information and support and engaging youth in the process.
YouthLine’s expansion beyond Portland, where Lines for Life is headquartered, began in 2018 with conversations in Central Oregon that resulted in a call center in Bend, OR, that provides access to rural youth and has resulted in YouthLine being more responsive to rural teens and young adults who contact the help, support, and crisis line. Later, in 2019, YouthLine began building a relationship with leaders of the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs to explore the possibility of collaborating on YouthLine Native: help, support, and crisis intervention for Native and Indigenous youth. The partnership with Warm Springs has included years of work within local tribal communities to learn more about the community in an effort to remove barriers from accessing mental health support and volunteering for Indigenous youth. In 2022, YouthLine opened a youth development space in Warm Springs that provides mental health education, workforce development, and volunteering opportunities for local youth.
In late 2023, YouthLine leaders were invited by providers on Maui and across the state to connect with government, healthcare, and nonprofit leaders in Hawai‘i to explore bringing the various components of the program to their state. After more than a year of relationship-building, learning, and planning, YouthLine secured local support to hire staff, provide training to young adults and youth-serving agencies, and launch a call center in early 2026 after hosting the first YouthLine training on the island of Maui in Fall 2025.
